Boeing 707-420 accident report

On November 27, 1962, the 707-441 PP-VJB c/n 17906 of the Varig flies against La Cruz Peak in the Surco District, in Peru. None of the 80 passengers and 17 crew survived the crash. Flight 810 Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil via Lima, Callao apt, Peru to Los Angeles (LAX), USA. Crashed on approach Lima, 25km South of Lima. Wrongly executed go-around and crashed against La Cruz Peak, 13km from the correct route. 1st flight 1960 engines : 4 Rolls Royce 508 Conway turbofans Location : +-5km 12°08'45"S 76°54'11"W

On January 24, 1966 another 707-420 flies against a mountain: the VT-DMN "Kanchenjunga" (mountain in the Himalayas), a 707-437 of Air India, c/n 18055 with 106 passengers and 11 crew members on board crashed into the Mont Blanc, 60m below the summit, all passengers are killed.

Flight 101 from Bombay(BOM) via Delhi(DEL)via Geneva(GVA) to London(LHR). Flies too low during approach Geneva, crashed against Mt.Blanc, 60m below the summit, at 4750m altitude, course 330' location : +-200m 45°49'57.25"N 6°51'48.17"E . Causes : navigation error, the pilot thought they had already passed mt.blanc and started the descent. Was warned by ATC but this was misunderstood by the pilot. altimeter deviation, miscommunication with ATC and white-out conditions.

In addition to crashed climbers, the Bosson glacier occasionally reveals debris from the plane (> location +-100m 45°53'36.25"N 6°51'05.58"E 1450m high, near Chamonix)

On March 5, 1966, the BOAC's 707-436 G-APFE c/n 17706 lands in heavy turbulence (CAT) near Mt.Fuji in Japan. The plane breaks into pieces in the air over Gotemba, Shizuoka, 80km ZZW from Tokyo and all 113 passengers and 11 crew members are killed. Turbulence was caused by air waves coming from Mt. Fuji.

Flight 911 from Tokyo(TYO) to Hong Kong(HKG). In VFR conditions deviated from normal route, to give the passengers a view of Mt.Fuji in clear blue sky, at 5000m altitude the aircraft breaks into pieces above Gotemba. Debris spreads over 15km x 1.5m in forests at the Eastern foot of the mountain near Tarobo. The aircraft had made its first flight in 1960 and had now made 6744, with a total of 19523 flight hours. Flight 712 from London-Heathrow (LHR) to Zurich (ZRH) with 11 crew and 116 passengers. Shortly after take-off there was a PUF. No.2 engine fell of after failure of the low pressure compressor wheel. Returned to land on 2350 [m] long RW05R. Came to stop at RW5R 1645 [m] from the threshold but caught fire due to omission to close the fuel valves correctly. First flight : 1962

Airframe hrs : 20870 engines : RR Conway 508. Five people died in the crash.

In 1968 LHR had diagonal runways. 2 were closed in the seventies. RW 5/23 was decommissioned in 2003 leaving LHR with two runways.

On June 22, 1982, Air India's 707-437 VT-DJJ c/n 17723 "Gauri Shankar" made a heavy landing on Bombay. There are 17 deaths. After the heavy landing at RW27, the plane bounced back into the air, the pilot tried a restart but crashed on unpaved terrain. The aircraft had made its first flight in 1960. Flight 403 from Kuala Lumpur(KUL) to Bombay(BOM) with 99 passengers and 12 crew members on board. Location : +-3km 19°05'18"N 72°51'50"E
